In Kobe's German textbook, there was one of those practice reading passages (you know, the kind that use only the vocabulary words you've learned in the previous chapter) about a day in the life of a cat, from the cat's perspective. "It was a cute story," Kobe said, "the cat talked about how its owners drank this hideous brown liquid made from ground up brown things every morning before they left for work." He showed me the passage, and we speculated on why it was that the cat couldn't concretely conceptualize coffee, but had no problem figuring out and linguistically identifying what its owners did when they left the house each day.
