10 June 2000 I'm having an "oh shit, everything's so fucked up" kind of day. I woke up late, at noon, feeling icky already. Literally. It's been really hot here for the past few days, so sleeping nekkid with a fan blowing full blast over me wasn't enough to keep the midday heat from creeping in. Really, I should just always wake up early in summer- I hate feeling hot and sticky and gross the very moment I awake, and the likelihood of that happening increases exponentially the later I sleep in. Other than the revolting Minnesota summer weather, most of what is "fucked up" is money. Mine, to be specific- I just don't have enough of it. I know that being broke is the default state of being for college students, but this is getting positively irritating. I need to pay bills, I need to get some clothes for work, and more than anything, I need to make sure I have enough money to pay the deposit and first month's rent for wherever it is I'm going to be moving. That last is growing particularly pressing: I'm expecting a phone call within the week from the manager of one place I'm considering, and I'd like to be prepared to sign a lease. I was looking forward to having a summer where I "only" have to work full time, thinking it'd be a fairly relaxing lead-in to my senior year, my last "carefree" undergraduate summer. Worrying about money isn't exactly contributing to that carefree state of mind, so I'm seriously considering getting another job. That prospect, of course, has it's own complications: I'd only like to work another 10 hours a week or so, and I'm only free on weekends and evenings. I also happen to have an unflagging hatred of any jobs relating to food and people in combination, a lasting byproduct of my unfortunate employment at Breadsmith. Freelance writing or web design would be fun, but I have no idea how to go about procuring such projects. Not to mention the fact that my web design skills are firmly wedged in the "medium/basic" skill level bracket; I do HTML well, but anything more complicated (e.g., Javascript, Flash, cgi scripting) is out of my league. It's not as if the world needs any more web designers, anyway- they're already multiplying like rabbits on Viagra. I would absolutely love to work at Ruminator Books, but they hire only very rarely. I make a point of walking by the store every day on my way home from work, hoping that a "help wanted" sign will go up in the window. No luck yet, but it's one of those things that is worth waiting for.
